The importance of regular oil changes

As seen in the K-W Record and TheRecord.com:

If your car, truck, van or SUV was a human being, the engine would be the heart of the vehicle and the blood the oil which courses through the motor to keep pistons and valves moving, opening and closing in an efficient and effective manner. Without oil, the engine would seize, no longer able to function. oil

At Columbia Auto Service and tire Centre, a family-owned and operated business for more than 60 years, they understand the importance of frequent oil changes to help sustain the life of your engine and vehicle. They will even be able to recommend the type of oil you should use and, based upon your driving habits – and, most importantly, determine how often you should bring your auto in for a complete lube, oil and filter service.

These days with the great strides being made by auto manufacturers, owner’s manuals may now suggest longer intervals between oil changes. Any reputable service company would respectfully differ; changing oil more frequently is key to ensure proper car care. Clean, fresh oil keeps parts lubricated – and moving.

The issue with extended oil change intervals is that some manufacturers are touting that you only need to change your oil every 5,000 km or so if you’re a frequent or “extreme” driver. Some manufacturers are even saying you don’t have to worry about changing oil for 12,000 km or more!

Because the average person doesn’t perceive they drive more than other commuters, they put off oil changes longer based on this recommendation. The thought is that longer intervals are being recommended to meet emissions standards, and to prevent overuse of fuel products.

The problem that is coupled with longer oil change intervals is that drivers also put off other maintenance requirements as well. It’s been proven that drivers usually take the opportunity to have other routine work done to their vehicle when they’re having their oil changed.

Assuming you are not running a taxi cab or limousine where weekly oil changes may be the norm, for what is considered normal, everyday usage, consider bringing your vehicle into your preferred shop, Columbia Auto Service and Tire Centre,  every 5,000 kilometres or four months. Expect the oil filter to be changed, old oil drained and flushed and up to five litres of brand new engine oil – likely either 5W20 or 5W30 – added. In addition, should be an inspection of the following fluids and topping up when necessary: engine coolant; brake fluid; power steering fluid; transmission fluid; and, windshield washer fluid. Skilled and highly-trained professionals will also inspect the drive belt; lubricate hinges, locks and latches, the chassis, steering and suspension. A visual inspection of front/rear-wheel drive systems, the steering system, suspension components, universal joints and boots, the exhaust system, tires, outside lights and windshield wipers will also occur. Naturally, timing for regular changes may vary dependent upon your driving habits.
